Tidio vs ManyChat: a channel decision, not a feature decision

· Laurentiu Dobra · 16 min read · Comparisons

Tidio is a website help desk with a separately priced AI agent; ManyChat is Instagram and Messenger automation with AI bundled from Pro up. Month-to-month, ManyChat Pro is $39/mo against $68/mo for Tidio Starter plus Lyro — but the two bill in incompatible units, and neither covers the other's channels.

Wallu at a glance

  • Price: plans from $4.99/month, billed flat — not per agent and not per AI resolution.
  • Free trial: 7 days.
  • Channels: website chat, Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Discord and email — answered by one AI agent in one inbox.
  • Store integrations: Shopify and WooCommerce, so the agent can answer order, shipping and refund questions from real order data.
  • Also included: AI email marketing and short-form video, on the same plan.

Most comparisons of these two products line up feature checklists and declare a winner. That is the wrong shape for the question, because Tidio and ManyChat barely overlap. One starts on your website and treats social messaging as an extension; the other starts in Instagram and Messenger DMs and has no website support desk at all. Buyers land here because they need both halves and are working out which missing half hurts less.

Table of Contents

Short answer: Tidio or ManyChat?

Short answer: Pick Tidio if the questions arrive on your website and someone on your team has to answer them — it is a live chat and ticketing help desk with an AI agent (Lyro) sold alongside it, and it is the only one of the two with a real support inbox. Pick ManyChat if the questions arrive in Instagram and Messenger DMs and the job is closer to marketing than support, because comment-to-DM automation, broadcasts and DM flows are things Tidio does not attempt. If you need both, neither covers the other's ground, and you will end up running two subscriptions or accepting a gap. On price, month-to-month, ManyChat Pro is $39/mo with AI bundled, while the equivalent Tidio setup is $29/mo for Starter plus $39/mo for the Lyro AI Agent, which is $68/mo.

How much do Tidio and ManyChat cost per month?

Both vendors load their pricing page with the annual toggle preselected, so the number you see first is not the month-to-month rate. Everything in the table below is the month-to-month list price — no annual prepay, no commitment.

Commit to twelve months and both come down. ManyChat Pro is $29/mo billed annually ($348 up front, marked as 25% off), Essential is $14/mo billed annually, Business $69/mo billed annually and Advanced $139/mo billed annually. Tidio Starter is $24.17/mo effective billed annually, Growth starts at $49.17/mo effective billed annually, and Lyro starts at $32.50/mo effective billed annually — Tidio's annual badge reads "2 months free", so the effective rate is ten months of money spread over twelve.

That $29 for ManyChat Pro is the figure nearly every third-party summary reprints as "the monthly price". It is not; it is the annual-prepay rate — $348 charged up front for twelve months. The cheapest paid ManyChat plan is Essential at $17/mo month-to-month, or $14/mo billed annually, and it has no AI at all.

One tier up, the two land almost on top of each other: ManyChat Business at $99/mo month-to-month against Tidio Growth at $59/mo plus Lyro at $39/mo, which is $98/mo month-to-month. Wallu's Starter tier at that point is $19/mo flat.

Overages matter more than the headline on both. ManyChat Pro charges $0.05 per additional Active Contact on the monthly cycle ($0.038 on annual); Essential charges $0.10 per contact monthly and Business drops to $0.025. Tidio does not use per-unit conversation overage — it moves you up a rung, and the Growth ladder runs $59 (250 conversations), $89 (400), $129 (600), $159 (800), $179 (1,000), $249 (1,500) and $349 (2,000), all month-to-month. Lyro has its own ladder on top: $39 for 50 AI conversations, $75 for 100, $140 for 200, $210 for 300 and $700 for 1,000 per month, month-to-month.

Why do the two prices not compare directly?

Because the units are different things, and no honest arithmetic converts one into the other.

ManyChat bills per Active Contact per month. In the vendor's own words: "An Active Contact is a real person you interact with during a monthly billing period — whether that happens through messages or automations. It doesn't matter how many messages you exchange. One person = one Active Contact for the month." A contact counts as active the moment messages are sent or received through ManyChat, including via automations, AI, broadcasts or the Inbox. A subscriber who receives one broadcast and never replies costs the same as someone who has a forty-message conversation with you.

Tidio bills per billable conversation. Its definition: "Any live chat, email, or social media message handled by a human agent counts as a billable conversation. Limits reset monthly." The important word is *human*. A conversation Lyro handles end to end does not consume a billable conversation; it consumes a Lyro conversation from the separately purchased AI allowance. Seats in Tidio are a feature cap, not the billing meter.

The practical effect: ManyChat Pro's 2,500 Active Contacts and Tidio Starter's 100 billable conversations are not two sizes of the same thing. ManyChat's number is large because a broadcast list burns through contacts quickly and most never generate a conversation. Tidio's is small because every one of those 100 is a human agent actually working a thread. A shop that sends one Instagram broadcast to 2,000 followers has used 2,000 ManyChat contacts and zero Tidio conversations.

There is a second axis people miss: ManyChat caps how many channels you may connect per plan. Free and Essential allow any two, Pro allows any three, and only Business and Advanced are unlimited. If your reason for buying is "Instagram plus Messenger plus WhatsApp plus a website widget", ManyChat Pro at $39/mo month-to-month runs out of channel slots before it runs out of contacts.

When is Tidio the better buy?

Tidio wins when the work is support and the work happens on your website.

  • It is an actual help desk. Live chat, ticketing, a shared inbox and email in one place. ManyChat has an Inbox, but it is a DM inbox attached to a marketing product, not a ticketing system.
  • Lyro is metered per AI conversation, defined as an interaction with at least one reply from the agent, so you are not paying for a bot that greeted someone and did nothing else.
  • The billing unit favours high-traffic, low-conversation businesses. If ten thousand people visit your store and fifty need a human, you pay for fifty. ManyChat's meter would count every person your automations touched.
  • Flows is a separate, honestly priced product. $29/mo month-to-month for 2,000 visitors reached, first 100 free — you are not forced to buy automation with support.
  • The free tier is a genuine trial of the help desk. 50 billable conversations at $0, plus a 7-day trial of the paid plans.

If you run an e-commerce store where most questions come from people already on your product pages — sizing, shipping, returns, where-is-my-order — Tidio is the better tool and it is not close.

When is ManyChat the better buy?

ManyChat wins decisively on social commerce, and it wins on things Tidio does not attempt at all.

  • Comment-to-DM automation. Someone comments a keyword on your Instagram post and ManyChat opens a DM with them. This is the single most common reason people buy ManyChat, and Tidio has no equivalent.
  • Broadcasts and sequences. You can message your subscriber list on Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp on a schedule. Tidio's model has no concept of this.
  • The flow builder is the mature one. ManyChat has spent years on DM automation specifically, and the builder reflects that focus.
  • The free tier is genuinely usable. 25 Active Contacts, two channels and four live automations at $0, no credit card required — enough to run one comment-to-DM automation and see whether it converts before paying anything.
  • AI is bundled from Pro up with no separate price. AI Goals, AI Comments, AI Replies, Knowledge, AI Step and AI Intention Recognition all come with the $39/mo month-to-month Pro plan. This is the strongest thing on ManyChat's price sheet and it is under-reported: comparable AI behaviour from Tidio means buying Lyro as a second subscription from $39/mo month-to-month, on top of the plan you already pay for.
  • Contacts get cheap at scale. 7,500 Active Contacts for $99/mo month-to-month, then $0.025 per contact, is inexpensive for list-driven businesses.

If your business runs on Instagram and your inbound is DMs and comments, ManyChat is the right purchase and Tidio will feel like it is fighting you.

What does each tool simply not do?

This is the part worth being blunt about, because it decides the question.

ManyChat has no website support desk. No ticketing, no help desk, no SLA handling, no agent-facing case management. It is a marketing automation platform with an inbox attached. If your plan is to replace a support tool with it, that plan does not work.

Tidio does not do social-first marketing automation. No comment-to-DM triggers, no broadcast campaigns to a DM list, no Instagram-native growth tooling. Social channels feed Tidio's inbox as another conversation source; they are not the product's centre of gravity.

Neither is a bad product. They are answers to different questions that happen to share a search term.

One caution on the rest of the results for this query: much of what ranks reprints ManyChat's $29 annual-prepay rate as the monthly price. Open both pricing pages yourself with the annual toggle switched off — Tidio's Starter card and ManyChat's Pro card both load on annual.

What are the billing traps in each?

ManyChat's annual plan is a hard lock. The terms are explicit: "Annual plans cannot be downgraded until the current annual term ends," and "If you're on an annual plan, you cannot switch to a monthly plan until the annual term has ended." The 25% saving on Pro is real, but you are buying twelve months you cannot leave or shrink, with a 30-day refund window from purchase as the only escape hatch. Overages are still calculated and billed monthly on annual plans, so the annual price is a floor, not a ceiling. Prices exclude tax and are set by billing country.

Tidio's 50 free Lyro conversations are lifetime, not monthly. The Free plan's AI allowance is a one-time grant; Tidio's own FAQ says you need to upgrade to the Lyro AI Agent plan to refresh it monthly. When it is gone it is gone until you subscribe.

Tidio's real entry price is two subscriptions. The $29/mo month-to-month Starter plan has no AI agent on its own. The combination most buyers want is $68/mo month-to-month, and Flows is a third line item at $29/mo month-to-month.

Both pages default to annual. Tidio's Starter card renders $24.17/mo on load; ManyChat's Pro card renders $29/mo. Neither is a month-to-month price, and neither card says so.

Where does Wallu fit, and where does it not?

We build Wallu, so weigh this section accordingly — the sections above are the ones to use when deciding between Tidio and ManyChat.

Wallu exists for the case this comparison exposes: the same questions arriving on many channels at once, with neither incumbent covering them all. Wallu answers on eight channels — website chat, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack and email among them — from one knowledge base, for $4.99/mo flat on the Mini entry plan (350 AI replies) and $19/mo flat on Starter. Measured against the $4.99 Mini plan, that is 7.8x under ManyChat Pro at $39/mo month-to-month and 13.6x under the $68/mo month-to-month Tidio Starter plus Lyro combination. The pricing is flat: no per-contact meter, no per-conversation meter, no separate AI subscription. There is a knowledge-base-only mode, so the agent answers strictly from what you gave it and stays quiet otherwise, and there is human handover when it cannot help.

Here is what Wallu is not, stated as plainly as the rest of this article:

  • No free tier. ManyChat's free plan gives you 25 Active Contacts indefinitely and Tidio's gives you 50 conversations. Wallu has no equivalent, so if "free until it proves itself" is a requirement, both incumbents beat us there.
  • A much smaller ecosystem. Tidio and ManyChat have large app marketplaces, agency networks, template libraries and years of community tutorials behind them. Wallu does not. Our WooCommerce integration sits on Assist Pro, not the entry plan.
  • No enterprise tooling. No SSO, no SLA management, no multi-brand administration, no dedicated success manager.
  • It is a support agent, not a marketing automation platform. Wallu will not run comment-to-DM campaigns, broadcasts or DM growth flows. If that is the job, ManyChat is the answer and we would say so.
  • It is not a full help desk either. If you need ticketing, agent workload routing and case management, Tidio does something Wallu does not.

Wallu is the right call when the problem is repetitive questions arriving everywhere at once, and the wrong call when the problem is campaign automation or formal ticket operations.

Frequently asked questions

Is ManyChat cheaper than Tidio?

At the entry point where both have AI, yes. ManyChat Pro is $39/mo month-to-month with AI bundled; Tidio Starter plus the Lyro AI Agent is $68/mo month-to-month. One tier higher they converge: ManyChat Business is $99/mo month-to-month against Tidio Growth plus Lyro at $98/mo month-to-month. Which is cheaper for you depends on whether your volume is measured in people (ManyChat) or in human-handled conversations (Tidio).

Does ManyChat have live chat for a website?

Not as a support help desk. ManyChat is built around Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp automation, with a unified inbox for DMs. It has no ticketing system and no website support desk in the sense Tidio, Zendesk or Freshdesk mean it. If website live chat with ticketing is the requirement, ManyChat is not the product.

Does Tidio work with Instagram and WhatsApp?

Yes. Tidio's own billing definition counts "any live chat, email, or social media message handled by a human agent" as a billable conversation, so social messages route into the same inbox as website chats. What Tidio does not do is social-first marketing: no comment-to-DM triggers, no broadcast campaigns.

Is ManyChat AI included or an extra cost?

Included, from Pro upward, with no separate price published. Manychat AI covers AI Goals, AI Comments, AI Replies, Knowledge, AI Step and AI Intention Recognition, and it comes with the $39/mo month-to-month Pro plan. The Essential plan at $17/mo month-to-month has no AI features at all.

Can you cancel a ManyChat annual plan?

Not mid-term. ManyChat states that annual plans cannot be downgraded until the current annual term ends, and that you cannot switch from annual to monthly until the term has ended. There is a 30-day refund window after purchase. If you want the ability to leave, buy the monthly cycle at $39/mo for Pro rather than $29/mo billed annually.

Are Tidio's 50 free Lyro conversations monthly?

No. They are a one-time lifetime grant on the Free plan. Tidio's FAQ says you need to upgrade to the Lyro AI Agent plan, which starts at $39/mo month-to-month for 50 AI conversations, for the allowance to refresh monthly.

What counts as a billable conversation in Tidio?

Any live chat, email or social media message handled by a human agent, with limits resetting monthly. A conversation resolved entirely by Lyro draws on the Lyro allowance instead. Seats are a plan feature, not the billing unit.

What is an Active Contact in ManyChat?

A real person you interact with during a monthly billing period, through messages or automations, regardless of how many messages you exchange. One person equals one Active Contact for that month. Contacts count as active when messages move through ManyChat via automations, AI, broadcasts or the Inbox, including outbound broadcasts the person never answers.

Can I use Tidio and ManyChat together?

Many teams do, because the products barely overlap: ManyChat for Instagram and Messenger growth, Tidio for website support and ticketing. Month-to-month that is $39 plus $68, which is $107/mo before either hits an overage rung.

What is the cheapest alternative to Tidio and ManyChat?

For answering repeat questions across many channels, Wallu is $4.99/mo flat on the Mini plan with 350 AI replies across eight channels from one knowledge base, and $19/mo flat on Starter, two tiers up, against $39/mo month-to-month for ManyChat Pro and $68/mo month-to-month for Tidio plus Lyro. The trade-offs are real: no free tier, a much smaller ecosystem, no enterprise tooling and no marketing automation. If you need DM campaigns, buy ManyChat. If you need a ticketing help desk, buy Tidio.
